Cristina Aleixendri Muñoz: Slashing Ships Emissions with Wingsails

“I realised that while many of the commodities around us are shipped on board a vessel, we need healthy oceans. It later became clear to me that engineering offers infinite ways to solve the world’s most pressing challenges”. (Read the full article from Europa.eu here.)

Cristina Aleixendri Muñoz: COO & Co-founder at bound4blue

Cristina Aleixendri Muñoz is co-founder of Bound4Blue, which has developed a rigid wing sail system for boats that folds and orients itself autonomously, helping vessels save on fuel costs by using the wind to boost their engines. This also reduces carbon emissions, making it easier to comply with environmental regulations.

Cristina has background as engineer, and consider technology key to succeed with sustainability and truly triple bottom line.

She holds a BSc. & MSc. in Aeronautical Engineering with a specialization in propulsion from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and an Executive MBA from IESE Business School. While building the startup, she has also attended several entrepreneurial programs at the University of Cambridge, ESADE Business School and Singularity University.

As recognition of her work enabling shipping industry to become more sustainable, Cristina has participated in more than 10 national and European projects, been the inventor of more than 5 patents in the field of wind-assisted propulsion systems and its various applications, such as hydrogen generation, as well as having the opportunity to present our technology and to raise awareness about the impact of shipping-related emissions at events such as COP24 from United Nations or in the European Parliament. She was selected in 2017 as one of Europe’s Top 50 most promising entrepreneurs, and received the 2019 edition of the Forbes 30 Under 30 Award (featuring the 30 brightest Manufacturing and Industry entrepreneurs under the age of 30 in Europe). In 2020 she won the FEDEPE’s Innovation and Female Entrepreneurship Award and the EIT Woman Award, then received the Women in Tech Start-Up Award and in 2022 she was recognized as Young Entrepreneur of the Year by Seatrade Maritime and received the Talgo Award for the Professional Excellence for Women in Engineering .

In my spare time, she participate in several initiatives to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls to choose whatever they want to do in life, like giving regular talks to female students or mentoring young women to launch their own entrepreneurial projects.

Her dedication to the cause earned her a spot on Forbes’s “30 Under 30 Europe 2019: Manufacturing & Industry” list and is just the starting point of her success story.
